What You Should (and Shouldn’t) Do After a Positive Pregnancy Test

A positive pregnancy test can stop you in your tracks. Whether the result was unexpected or something you were hoping for, the most important next step is getting clear, accurate information so you can move forward with confidence.

Start by confirming the details

At-home pregnancy tests are usually reliable, but they don’t tell you everything. Confirming the pregnancy with a medical provider helps you understand how far along you are and what’s happening in your body.

An ultrasound is often part of this step. It can confirm the location of the pregnancy, estimate gestational age, and identify whether it is developing as expected. Having this information early is important for both your health and any decisions you may be considering.

Pay attention to your health and symptoms

Early pregnancy can look different for everyone, but common symptoms include fatigue, nausea, and mild cramping. These are usually normal.

However, symptoms like severe abdominal pain, heavy bleeding, or dizziness should not be ignored and should be evaluated by a medical professional.

Give yourself space to think clearly

It’s easy to feel pressure to figure everything out right away, but you don’t have to make a decision immediately.

Take time to:
  • Talk with someone you trust
  • Ask questions
  • Understand your options fully

Avoid relying only on online information, which can be overwhelming and not specific to your situation.

Moving forward with clarity

A positive test is the beginning of getting answers, not the end of the process. Taking a few steady, informed steps now can help you feel more confident about what comes next.

Alight provides pregnancy confirmation, on-site ultrasounds, and a confidential place to talk through your next steps, all at no cost.
