I missed my period... Could I be pregnant? Should I take a pregnancy test? What if the test is negative?
If you've had sex and your period hasn't arrived when expected, pregnancy is one possibility, but it isn't the only reason your period may be late.
Here's what to know if you're waiting for your period and wondering what comes next.

Can a Late Period Mean I'm Pregnant?
Yes. A missed period can be one of the earliest signs of pregnancy.
During pregnancy, hormonal changes prevent the uterine lining from shedding as it normally would during menstruation. However, a late or missed period does not automatically mean you're pregnant. Your cycle can change from month to month, and several factors can affect when your period arrives.¹
If pregnancy is possible, taking a pregnancy test is the best way to begin finding out.
When Should You Take a Pregnancy Test?
You can take a home pregnancy test after your missed period. In general, pregnancy tests are more likely to give an accurate result once you've missed your period because there is more of the pregnancy hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) available for the test to detect.² ⁴
Testing too early can result in a false negative, meaning the test says you're not pregnant even though you are. The timing of ovulation and implantation can vary, which means you may not produce enough hCG for a test to detect pregnancy right away.² ⁴
If you're testing at home:
Check the expiration date on the test.
Follow the instructions carefully.
Use your first morning urine when possible.
Check the result within the timeframe specified by the manufacturer.
If you get a negative result but your period still doesn't come, consider testing again in several days.²
What Are Some Early Signs of Pregnancy?
A missed period isn't the only possible sign of pregnancy. Some people notice symptoms such as:
Tender or swollen breasts
Fatigue
Nausea or vomiting
Increased urination
Changes in appetite
Increased sensitivity to smells
Mild cramping
However, pregnancy symptoms aren't proof of pregnancy. Many early pregnancy symptoms can also happen before a period or for other reasons. A pregnancy test is a better way to determine whether pregnancy may be the reason for your symptoms.³
