Can You Be Pregnant and Not Know It?

It might sound unlikely, but yes, it is possible to be pregnant and not realize it right away. While many women notice symptoms early, others may not experience the typical signs, or they may mistake them for something else.

Why You Might Not Know

Every pregnancy is different. Some women have very mild symptoms, or none at all, especially in the early weeks. Others may still have light bleeding that feels like a period, making it easy to assume they’re not pregnant.

Common early pregnancy symptoms can include:
  • Missed period
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Fatigue
  • Breast tenderness
  • Frequent urination

But not everyone experiences these in the same way or at the same time.

When Symptoms Are Confusing

Sometimes pregnancy symptoms can overlap with everyday stress, hormonal changes, or illness. For example, fatigue or nausea could easily be dismissed as a busy schedule or something you ate.

In some cases, women with irregular cycles may not immediately notice a missed period, which can delay recognizing a pregnancy.

Why It Matters to Know Early

Finding out early can help you take the next steps with clarity and confidence. Whether you’re considering parenting, adoption, abortion or simply want to understand what’s happening in your body, having accurate information matters.

How to Be Sure

The only way to confirm a pregnancy is through a reliable test, and ideally, a follow-up ultrasound to confirm how far along you are and that the pregnancy is developing properly.

At Alight, we offer free, lab-quality pregnancy tests and ultrasounds in a confidential, supportive setting. If you think you might be pregnant, or just aren’t sure, we’re here to give you clear answers and walk through your next steps with you.
