Can the Abortion Pill Be Reversed?

If you’ve taken the first abortion pill and are having second thoughts, you’re not alone. Some women begin the process and then realize they want to continue their pregnancy. If that’s where you are, it’s important to know that you may still have options.

Understanding the Abortion Pill Process

The abortion pill typically involves two medications taken in sequence. The first pill, mifepristone, blocks progesterone, a hormone necessary for a pregnancy to continue. The second pill, misoprostol, causes the uterus to contract and expel the fetus (Starkman).

If only the first pill has been taken, some providers offer what is known as abortion pill reversal.

How Reversal Works

Abortion pill reversal involves taking progesterone in an effort to counteract the effects of mifepristone and support the pregnancy. Because progesterone plays a key role in sustaining pregnancy, this approach aims to reintroduce that support.
This process is typically started as soon as possible, often within 24 hours, though some reports suggest it may still be attempted within 72 hours of taking the first pill (Abortion Pill Reversal).

It’s important to note that this option is only available before taking the second medication, misoprostol.

Safety and Effectiveness

Progesterone has been used in pregnancy care for decades, including in cases of miscarriage prevention and IVF support (Charlotte Lozier Institute).

Some reports and case studies suggest that abortion pill reversal may increase the chances of continuing a pregnancy. However, outcomes can vary, and success cannot be guaranteed (Abortion Pill Reversal).

Why Medical Care Matters

If you’ve taken the first abortion pill, getting medical care right away is an important next step.

An ultrasound can:
  • Confirm how far along you are
  • Determine if the pregnancy is viable
  • Confirm that the pregnancy is located in the uterus (not ectopic)

This information gives you the clarity you need to make an informed decision.

You Still Have a Choice

If you regret starting the abortion process, you deserve the chance to explore your options.
